Our Cave Art Tour includes Lascaux 2 and 4!

Lascaux is known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Prehistory’ and your Cave Art Tour includes a visit to Lascaux 2 AND Lascaux 4!  Two different styles of presentation, but both incredible - you can’t help but be impressed The scale and the range of artistic techniques used by our ancestors has to be seen to be appreciated. During your Tour, together with Steve,  you will explore the cave art in various world famous Ice Age sites - including Font de Gaume and Rouffignac. The archaeology here in the Vezere Valley (Dordogne), France is stunning and your Tour takes in some of the best!  We know because our visitors say so - check out the Comments (use the back arrow to return here)

This is a 4 night/5 day Tour  and the price includes ticket costs, guiding/interpretation and local transport. 

2018 Cave Art Tour Itinerary
Day 1 MonArrive into Brive-la-Gaillarde rail station around 13.00 to link into our free transfer*. Steve will be there to meet you and to make the most of your time here, we’ll get straight into your Tour with a visit to Lascaux II* - known as the 'Sistine Chapel of Prehistory'. Before heading to your hotel in the quaint medieval town of Montignac for your 4 night stay, an ‘apero’ (aperatif) and a chance to meet Judie ‘chez nous’ (at our home) in the small hamlet of Les Bories in the Vezere Valley.

Day 2 Tues

Our visits today take in the recently opened Lascaux 4 - the original is known as the 'Sistine Chapel of Prehistory'  and also Grotte de Rouffignac , known as the ‘Cave of the Hundred Mammoths’ and accessed by electric train.

Day 3 WedSarlat is another gem of a medieval town with a bustling colourful market, so that’s where we willl start today. In the afternoon, Steve will take you to Grotte de Cougnac,  stunning geology and amazing archaeology. You’ll see red and black outline paint-ings of ibex and the extinct megaceros - you get really close to your ancestors here
Day 4 Thurs

Today we go to Les Eyzies, known as the World Capital of Prehistory. Steve will show you the highlights of the vast collections in the National Museum of Prehistory and make sense of it for you.  Today you will also see Font de Gaume* - the only poly-chrome cave of its type in the world that is open to the public and Les Combarelles* - famous for its 600+ engravings especially the ‘Drinking Deer’.

Your final evening – and to say “thank you for booking with us”, we take you out to dinner to one of our favourite restaurants in Montignac!

Day 5 FriOur final visit is to Le Thot where you can see additional scenes from Lascaux and how the cave art is produced - the same materials and techniques were used in both the facsimile and the original!   Then on to Brive-la-Gaillarde rail station to continue your travels.
