Tuesday

Arrival day - settle in, evening meal at Les Rosiers and an informal Introduction to the Archaeology of the area

 

Wednesday

Visit to Lascaux II - the incredible replica of the original 17,000 year old ‘Sistine Chapel of Prehistory’ - it’s 10 minutes away by car or about 1½ hours on foot - the choice is yours. Visit to Rouffignac – ‘the Hundred Mammoths Cave’

 

Thursday

am Castelnaud - awe-inspiring castle towering over the Dordogne and fascinating Museum of Medieval Warfare

pm. Domme - a royal French bastide to counter the English, the medieval street plan has

hardly been changed in 700 years.  Stunning views too!

 

Friday

Visit to the National Museum of Prehistory – a treasure house of finds from numerous type sites, essential for understanding our ancestors.

Visit to Abri Pataud where 13,000 years of occupation is right in front of you! Followed by a short stroll to Abri Cro Magnon - where the first modern humans were recognised.

 

Saturday

Sarlat Medieval Town (market day!) – free time to explore and shop.   

pm  Either extra time in Sarlat or visit to Commarque - a medieval castle and town lost in the woods.

 

Sunday

Visit to Font de Gaume – 230 exceptional multicoloured wall paintings.  The only cave of its type open to the public.  Visit to Les Combarelles – famous for the ‘Drinking Deer’.

 

Monday

Unless extra days have been booked, sadly this is the end of your holiday - Bon Retour! (Happy Return) - you can’t possibly have seen and done everything in a week!
