Medieval Tour

Example Itinerary

The Dordogne and Vezere Valleys are rich in medieval sites and churches, villages and castles.  The following itinerary will give you an idea of the number and variety of sites you'll see during your holiday.

The actual sites may change depending on the time of year, interests of the group, special events and exhibitions.

 

Note: Our Guided Archaeology Holidays start on Tuesdays - so you can benefit from cheap flights!

Tuesday  

Arrival day - we can arrange a transfer from the airport or you may choose to drive here.  Settle in, evening meal at Les Rosiers and an introduction to the week's activities and the

history of the region.

 

Wednesday

Visit to Rocamadour  - a major pilgrimage centre, set spectacularly over the River Alzou travelling via Martel Medieval Town - its medieval centre has survived from its heyday in the 13th & 14th centuries and is still remarkably intact. We return via Soulliac to view the superb medieval sculptures at the Abbey of St Mary.

 

Thursday

Limeuil – one of the most beautiful villages in France – and St Martin’s Church. Urval on the banks of the Dordogne. Cadouin -  Cistercian abbey and pilgrim centre. St. Avit-le-Senieur – a chance to take part in medieval crafts. Beaumont - an English Bastide.

Friday

Perigueux – towering pilgrim cathedral of St. Front surrounded by network of medieval streets. St.Emilion – World Heritage Site – centre of the wine trade for centuries.

 

Saturday

Sarlat – guided tour around the medieval town, free time to explore the market. Domme – a royal bastide and Templar prison. Castelnau - towering over the Dordogne, museum of medieval warfare and stunning views.

 

Sunday

We’re on the track of The Hundred Years War and the Templars. passed this way. The stories unfolds at Sergeac, Roque de St. Christophe, Maison forte de Reignac and Chateau de Puymartin.

 

Monday

Unless extra days have been booked, sadly this is the end of this holiday - Bon Retour! (Happy Return - you can’t possibly have seen everything in a week!)
