Example Itinerary

The following itinerary will give you an idea of the number and variety of sites in or around the Vezere Valley you could see during your holiday.  The actual sites may vary depending on the time of year, your interests or  special events and exhibitions.

 

Note: Our Guided Archaeology Holidays start on Tuesdays - so you can benefit from cheap flights!

 

Tuesday

Arrival day - we can arrange a transfer from the airport or you may choose to drive here.  Settle in, evening meal at Les Rosiers with an informal introduction to the prehistoric art and archaeology of the area

 

Wednesday

am Visit to National Museum of Prehistory, Les Eyzies - with unrivalled collections

from all major sites in France

pm Visit to Abri Pataud - 13,000 years of occupation right in front of you!

 

Thursday

am Visit to Lascaux II - the incredible replica of the original 17,000 year old ‘Sistine

Chapel of Prehistory’ (either walking or driving)

pm  Visits to Castel Merle (the oldest ‘jewels’ in the world were discovered here) and

the Castanet family’s Museum

 

Friday

am Abri Cap Blanc – the only prehistoric sculptured frieze accessible publicly.

pm Visit to Rouffignac - ‘the Hundred Mammoths Cave’

 

Saturday

am Morning to explore Sarlat medieval town and market

pm Visit to Cougnac - stunning geology and wonderful archaeology - red and black outline paintings of ibex and the extinct megaceros.  

 

Sunday

am visit to Font de Gaume - 230 exceptional multicoloured wall paintings. The only cave of its type in the world open to the public.

pm visit to Les Combarelles - over 600 pictures, including the famous ‘Drinking Deer’

 

Monday

Visit Unless extra days have been booked, sadly this is the end of your holiday - Bon Retour! (Happy Return) - you can’t possibly have seen and done everything in a week!
